Freezer Warehouse Project
Freezer Warehouse Project This cold storage warehouse was originally finished in 1995 with 92,000 square feet of –20°F freezer area. Two years later we were back to begin construction that would double the original size of the warehouse. The complete system includes 7 Frick single stage variable volume screw compressors ranging from 150 HP to 450 HP, 3 evaporative condensers, 24 evaporators, 5 vessels, a Frick computerized control system, a floor warming system beneath the entire freezer, and a variety of auxiliary equipment. Industrial Refrigeration Service also strategically located 22 ammonia gas sensors throughout the complex. These sensors can detect the presence of ammonia gas well below a harmful level.

Cold storage warehouses are only as successful as their refrigeration system. Chambersburg Cold Storage is a successful modern facility with a dependable, cost efficient, and user friendly refrigeration system

Spiral Freezer Project
Spiral Freezer Project Industrial Refrigeration Service, Inc. recently provided Gold Signature Foods with a major refrigeration upgrade. Gold Signature's products range from chicken patties to onion rings that are quick frozen in spiral freezers.

Industrial Refrigeration Service, Inc. was involved with all areas of the installation allowing a "turn key" project. Not only did Industrial Refrigeration Service supply the spiral freezers and the refrigeration, we also supplied construction and project management, allowing the customer to concentrate on the product itself. Industrial Refrigeration supplied AutoCAD services and production line layout drawings coordinating the various vendors selected by Gold Signature.

The challenge involved using as much refrigeration as possible from the existing single stage ammonia system and converting it to a two stage freezing facility. Industrial Refrigeration Service utilized an existing pump receiver as a flash intercooler and added 310 tons of Frick rotary screw booster compressor. Two new spiral freezers were installed by Industrial Refrigeration, allowing Gold Signature to run a variety of products simultaneously.

Along with the new boosters, Industrial Refrigeration installed a new "state-of-the-art" Frick RWF high stage compressor to supplement the original equipment. Other items dove-tailed into the existing facility were a 400 ton pump recirculation unit and a 500 ton Imeco evaporative condenser. At present, this facility has a total high stage compressor capacity of 1,250 tons.

Energy Saving Ice Builder Package
Energy Saving Ice Builder Package IRS constructed a customized chiller package for a central ice builder system that provides air conditioning to the entire Montgomery College campus. This system allowed the college to remove the high-energy cost, undependable, and out dated air conditioning equipment that was scattered about the campus. The customized chiller package was built at our shop. It included a 450 ton capacity ammonia to ethylene glycol shell & tube chiller, a 500 HP Frick screw compressor, and a shell and tube condenser. The package chills ethylene glycol to 10°F, which is used to build ice in two 12,000 ton-hour Ice storage modules.

The college conducted an in-depth investigation on the benefits of different refrigerants. They discovered that ammonia was the best refrigerant. They elected to use ammonia instead of R-22 due to ammonia being more efficient and less expensive. In addition, production of R-22 is being phased out due to its affect on global warming and the college did not want to use a refrigerant that could be detrimental to the environment. The operators also preferred ammonia because of its self alarming smell if a leak were to occur.

By using an ice builder system the college was able to reduce its overall refrigeration capacity needed by making ice during the night and using the stored ice during the warm hours of the day. Not only did Montgomery College benefit by using less electric during peak hours but they also received a 6-figure rebate from the local power company for lowering their peak usage. The new ice builder system will eventually pay for itself through the savings in electricity costs.

Cold Storage Construction
Cold Storage Construction When Safeway decided to build their new Eastern Division Distribution Center, they enlisted our help for all of their refrigeration needs. Industrial Refrigeration Service played a pivotal role in completing the project in a timely fashion. We were there from the onset of the project and were very proud to be included in the grand opening ceremony.

The facility is exceptional. The five building complex covers 154 acres, it includes a 389,000 square foot grocery warehouse and a 297,000 square foot perishable warehouse. The 11,738,142 cubic foot perishable building uses enough refrigeration to air condition over 750 homes.

Industrial Refrigeration Service remains committed to our customers. As with this project, we can be there from the inception of the construction phase through start up. Our dedicated service department continues to provide prompt warranty service and preventative maintenance programs after the equipment is in use.

Dairy Upgrade Project
Dairy Upgrade Project MorningStar Dairy in Frederick, Maryland has recently expanded their operation and increased their output of non-dairy creamers.

Industrial Refrigeration Service, Inc. was selected to perform the ammonia system retrofits and additions. Since MorningStar operates on a 24/7 schedule, their "ice builders" were limited to chilling and could no longer be relied upon to offer a load shedding alternative. Industrial Refrigeration Service decided to "piggy-back" a Chester-Jensen short gas flow chiller on top of an existing ice builder. This style of chiller uses a very close approach and still utilizes the ice builder as a cold water storage tank. Should MorningStar shut down, the ice builder could immediately begin to build ice again.

Due to the strict dairy health requirements and MorningStar's commitment to excellence, Industrial Refrigeration Service selected and installed a rooftop ACUair unit. This unit supplies approximately 100 tons of production area cooling and uses H.E.P.A. filters.

As the load on the system increased, Industrial Refrigeration Service was contracted to install a new 250 ton Frick rotary screw compressor complete with thermosyphon oil cooling. In addition, a 358 ton evaporative condenser was installed.

At present, MorningStar Dairy has approximately 793 instantaneous high stage tons of refrigeration.

Customized Refrigeration Packages
Customized Refrigeration Packages Industrial Refrigeration Service constructs many refrigeration packages. We build these packages in our shop and ship them to any location. The package in this picture was constructed for a company in California that quick freezes hamburgers at -60°F for Burger King. It was constructed to the customers exact specifications.

Fabricated packages can save the customer time and money considering that all of the material and labor is in one place. We can build a package in our shop quicker than on a jobsite, and it also allows us to keep our quality at its highest by making multi-day inspections during construction. These package systems are ideal for customers that are located outside of our geographical area.
